This two-year model program focused on rabies eradication in Mannar Island. Mannar has an estimated 4500 stray dogs, we aim to vaccinate and sterilize 75% of the dog population. The program will also expand to cat sterilizations in the area. The program could serve as a blueprint for rabies eradication in Sri Lanka.

Initiated in response to concerns about stray dogs affecting temple visitors, this five-year project is a collaboration of VFF, justice for Animals and the Anuradhapura municiple council . The project includes sterilizations and vaccinations of dogs across 30 divisions. After issues arose with puppies being abandoned, VFF expanded the program to neighboring areas.

Established to address tourist safety following incidents of dog bites, this program was initiated by Adopt-a-Dog, VFF and Central Cultural Fund to provide a biannual population management and annual vaccinations. The program expanded to nearby villages in 2018, and even proceeded during COVID-19 time taking precautionary measures.

The Dog Care Clinic (DCC) in Galle became a site for abandoned puppies, To address this issue DCC and VFF started this dog sterilization project in 2019. By 2021, it expanded to near by regions such as Akmeemana, Habaraduwa, Imaduwa, and Galle provincial sectors. This has become Sri Lanka’s largest sterilization initiative, running five days a week. The program also trains local and international veterinary students, ensuring sustainable impact.
